Recognized as "Maine Treasures," the PORTLAND STRING QUARTET is renowned for its energy, focus, and sheer beauty of performance. For MMC, the quartet spans the centuries, beginning with Beethoven's 1801 Quartet in A Major in which he begins adapting traditional composition for a nascent iconoclasm. Brahms' 1864 Piano Quartet in F Minor is the perfect vehicle for Miami's international pianist PAUL POSNAK, renowned for his pianism, power and precision. The surprise of the concert is the newly-rediscovered composition of African American composer Florence Price, Five Folksongs in Counterpoint. Price is the first black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra (Chicago Symphony, 1933) and her work was performed by the likes of her friend Marian Anderson. Join us as Oh My Darlin' Clementine, Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes, Shortnin' Bread, Calvary and Swing Low Sweet Chariot join Beethoven and Brahms in the baroque beauty of La Merced Chapel.
